Jhana Downie, Terice Steen Advance to Saturday’s Quarterfinals

NM State will compete in three events on Saturday for chance at NCAA Championships.

Fayetteville, Ark. – Tumultuous weather has been the theme of the weekend over the first two days of action at the NCAA West Regional hosted by Arkansas at John McDonnell Field. On Thursday, the Aggies participated in six different events, looking to advance for a chance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
 
Terice Steen became the first Aggie to advance to quarterfinal action in the 400m hurdles, followed shortly after by Jhana Downie in the 400m dash. The duo were already slated to compete with the 4x400 relay team on Saturday, but will now have two chances to make the trip to Hayward Field at the University of Oregon June 5-8.
 
Track Headlines
Aliyah Logan took to the track first for NM State, competing in the 100m hurdles. Logan posted a time of 13.08 seconds at this year's Texas Relays to qualify for Thursday's meet. Competing in the third of six heats, Logan finished fifth in her heat with a time of 13.43 seconds.
 
Terice Steen became the first Aggie to advance to quarterfinal action, qualifying in the 400m hurdles. Posting a time of 57.90 at the CUSA Championships to secure a spot in Thursday's competition, the senior form Hanover, Jamaica recorded a mark of 58.01 to finish runner-up in her heat. Steen competes in quarterfinal action for the second consecutive season.
 
Jhana Downie took part in the 200m dash at the NCAA West first round for the second straight year, earning her spot in the competition after posting an all-conditions best of 23.18 at the LSU Alumni Gold meet. On Thursday, Downie finished third overall in her heat with a wind-adjusted time of 22.96 (+4.6), barely edging out Texas' Kevona Davis (22.97). Downie advances to the quarterfinals for the second straight season.
 
Maggie Gibbs and Emily Stutesman closed the Aggie action in Fayetteville on Thursday in the 10,000m run. The duo qualified after recording personal bests and the top two placements in program history for the event at the 2024 Stanford Invitational. Gibbs, a graduate student from Peoria, Ariz., finished first among Aggies after recording a time of 35:17.67 while Stutesman crossed the line with a time of 36:12.48.
 
Field Headlines
Miranda Tcheutchoua started the day for the Aggies with the hammer throw at 8:30 a.m. local time, about two hours ahead of schedule due to forecasted storms. After posting a mark of 58.61m (192-3") at the CUSA Championships to qualify for first round action, the junior from Ireland posted a best mark of 54.97m (180-4) in Fayetteville.
 
Rebecca Green competed for the Aggies in the shot put, coming into the event with a best toss of 16.59m (54-5.25"), set at the 2024 Stanford Invitational. The Los Alamos native recorded a best mark of 16.50m (54-1.75") to finish second in her heat and 23rd overall.
