NM State Drops Contest with Washington

Aggie road trip continues Thursday against Arizona.

SEATTLE, Wash.  – NM State falls to Washington 2-0 in first loss of the 2024 season. The loss snaps the Aggies 13-game regular season unbeaten streak, and this is their first loss since losing to USC on Sept. 14, 2023.

The Huskies began the game quickly, recording five shots, including four on goal in the opening eight minutes of the contest. Sophomore forward Samaiah Shell gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at the eight-minute mark, and Ioanna Papatheodoro made it a 2-0 ball game just 16 minutes into the contest.

Shila Rasoul paced the Aggie attack in the early going, recording a pair of shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes.

At the half, the Aggies trailed Washington in shots (9-3) and shots on goal (7-2), while holding an edge in saves (4-3) and corner kicks (2-1).

The Aggies recorded the first shot attempt of the second half off the foot of junior forward Meredith Scott, though it turned into a Washington goal kick.

While NM State was the more aggressive offensive team in the second half (4-1 shots on goal advantage in half two), the Aggies failed to find the back of the net for the first time this season, ultimately falling to Washington 2-0.

Shila Rasoul led the Aggies in shots on the day with three, while Meredith Scott, Caeltyn Johannes and Milana Eyrich recorded two shots each. Rasoul and Eyrich tied for the Crimson & White lead in shots on goal with two, while Johannes and Scott recorded one shot on goal apiece.

Valerie Guha added five saves on the day, giving her 11 total during the two-game road trip. Both Guha and Marlee Cavitt played the full 90 minutes of the match

This was the Aggies' third and final match against a Big Ten opponent. The Aggies finished 1-1-1 against all Big Ten opponents they have faced this season.

The Aggies will continue their road trip with a trip to Tucson, Ariz., to play their first Big 12 opponent of the season the Arizona Wildcats on September 5, at 8 p.m. MT.  For complete coverage of NM State Women's Soccer, visit NMStateSports.com - the official home of Aggie athletics – and follow us on Twitter (@NMStateWSOC), Instagram (@nmstatewsoc) and like us on Facebook (NM State Women's Soccer)
