Aggies Win Streak Snapped by Rival New Mexico

| By:

Strong start in doubles not enough as NM State falls 4-2.

NM State 2, New Mexico 4
Riding a four-match win streak, NM State hosted I-25 rival New Mexico at the NM State Tennis Center this morning in their final home match before heading on the road next week. Despite a promising start in doubles play, the Aggies fell to the Lobos 4-2.

The day began with doubles action, where NM State struck first as Lisa Zhu and Montana Parkinson-Lubold dominated Maud Vandeputte and Sarah O'Connor 6-1. However, Dora Kurdi and Whitney Moon were defeated 6-3, leaving the doubles point to be decided by Anna Pinaieva and Nadia Nemeth. In a hard-fought battle, Pinaieva and Nemeth edged out Maria Sodre and Rebekkah Gaines 7-5, securing the doubles point for the Aggies.

With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, NM State looked to build on their momentum. Whitney Moon delivered a commanding performance, defeating Sarah O'Connor 6-1, 6-1 to give the Aggies a 2-0 advantage. However, the Lobos responded by winning four straight singles matches, two of which went to three sets, to secure the victory.

Anna Pinaieva was on the verge of a win, holding a 7-5, 6-1, 5-2 lead over Rebekkah Gaines, but her match went unfinished as New Mexico clinched the overall victory. The loss drops NM State to 7-4 on the season.
