FORT COLLINS, Colo. – NM State opened play at the John Messick Invitational today, turning in a solid first day of competition highlighted by four singles victories and a doubles win at the CSU Tennis Complex.
The Aggies were led by a pair of strong debut performances as transfer Emma Petton and junior Whitney Moon each picked up straight-set wins. Petton fought off Colorado State's Annika Planinsek 6-3, 7-5, while Moon battled through for a 6-4, 7-5 win over Sorcha Caves of CSU.
Sophomore Montana Parkinson-Lubold added to the tally with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Utah State's Maria Paula Ramos Garcia, and Nadia Nemeth dominated her match with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Montana State's Lola Bean.
Elsewhere in singles play, Anna Pinaieva and Dora Kurdi each came up short in three-set battles, while freshmen Mariella Gelbke and Anna Klimova dropped their opening matches.
In doubles action, Nemeth and Klimova earned NM State's lone win of the day, cruising past their opponents 6-1. Pinaieva and Moon, Parkinson-Lubold and Kurdi, and the duo of Petton and Gelbke each fell in competitive matches.
The Aggies will return to action Saturday morning as day two of the three-day tournament gets underway at 9 a.m.
