LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NM State delivered one of the most explosive offensive performances in program history on Tuesday afternoon at Presley Askew Field at Johnson Stadium, overwhelming Southwest 39-4 behind 32 hits, scoring multiple runs in every inning. In total, nine different Aggies recorded hits as NM State improved to 8-8 on the year and matched its program record in runs scored.
The Aggies set the tone immediately with a four‑run first inning, highlighted by RBI swings from
Jonatan Clough,
Easton Rulli and
Brandon Clizbe, including a run‑scoring triple from Clizbe. NM State added two more in the second, three in the third, and four in the fourth to stretch the lead to 13-1. The early surge featured extra‑base hits from
Camden Kaufman,
Aidan Taclas and
Steve Solorzano, who doubled home two in the fourth.
Later, Clough launched the first of his two home runs in a four‑run fifth, then added another in a seven‑run sixth as NM State piled up eight hits in that frame alone. The Aggies continued pouring it on in the seventh, scoring six more times, including a two‑RBI triple from Kaufman and a two‑RBI double from
Chris Daniels.
NM State closed the day with a nine‑run eighth inning, highlighted by a string of RBI hits from Kaufman, Solorzano, Taclas, Clough, Rulli and
Aidan Lombardi, who doubled home two. In all, the Aggies posted 17 extra‑base hits, including four triples and two home runs. The Aggies also hit hit an astounding 22-for-33 (.667) with runners in scoring position.
Clough led the offensive attack with a 5‑for‑7, 7‑RBI showing, while Kaufman drove in seven of his own on four hits. Solorzano (4‑for‑7, 5 RBI), Taclas (4‑for‑7, 3 RBI), Rulli (4‑for‑7, 3 RBI) and Lombardi (4‑for‑5, 3 RBI) also contributed in big ways at the plate. Daniels added five RBI and Clizbe reached base four times with three hits, including a triple.
On the mound,
JT Price earned the win by tossing four innings of one‑run ball with five strikeouts before
Carson Timmons,
Hazen Wright,
Asa Briggs,
Matthew Yarc and
Cade Shumard combined to finish the final five frames. NM State's staff allowed just one earned run on the day.
NOTABLES
- NM State's 39 runs matches the most runs in a single game in program history, equaling the Aggies' production on Feb. 23, 2018, when they scored 39 runs against Mississippi Valley State.
- NM State also recorded a program-record 37 RBIs, surpassing the previous program record of 35, which was set in the 39-run outburst against Mississippi Valley State in 2018.
- The Aggies also produced four triples to tie a program record that was most recently posted on Feb. 16, 2019, against Texas Southern. In total, the Aggies have now tallied four triples in a single game five times in program history.
- With six runs scored apiece, Easton Rulli and Camden Kaufman matched a program record that had previously been recorded on three separate occasions, with the most recent coming on March 14, 2010, when Ryan Aguayo crossed the plate six times against Georgia State. Cory Smith (May 3, 1997) and Paul Freer (April 7, 1981) have also recorded six runs in a single game.
- Camden Kaufman matched a program record with two triples in a single game. This marked the 11th time this has been accomplished in program history, with the most recent coming on March, 21, 2021, when Tommy Tabak turned in a pair of triples against Northern Colorado.
- Freshman JT Price recorded his first collegiate win, tossing 4.0 innings, while allowing just one earned run and tallying a career-best five strikeouts.
