Aggies Finish Tied for Eighth Among Deep Field at Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate

Mateo Payán finishes tied for 21st to lead Aggies.

TUCSON, Ariz. – The NM State men's golf team completed its fourth tournament of the spring season as it finished in a tie for eighth place in a field that included five programs ranked among the top 32 teams in the country. As a team, the Aggies combined to shoot two over par, concluding the week with an 866 across the two-day event.
 
The team title was earned by host No. 22 Arizona, which shot 25-under for the week. The Wildcats were followed closely behind by No. 32 Long Beach State, which ended the week just one stroke behind Arizona. The individual crown was won by Alejandro De Castro, who shot 13-under for the week to clear the field by three strokes after 54 holes of action.
 
The Aggies were paced by sophomore Mateo Payán, who posted rounds of 73, 73 and 68 to serve as the only member of the Crimson and White to end the week in the red. Meanwhile, just one stroke separated Ethan Klose, Javier Delgadillo and Kostka Horno as Klose closed out the week at three-over to place in a tie for 40th, while Delgadillo and Horno came in at four-over to earn a tie for 43rd. Jackson Funkhouser rounded out the group of Aggies in a tie for 50th (+6) in the field of 81 competitors.
 
NUMBERS OF NOTE
  • Mateo Payán's finish served as the fourth top-25 of his sophomore campaign and his third in a row after placing 12th and 11th, respectively, in his most recent outings.
  • Ethan Klose's eagle in the final round served as one of just 16 players to record an eagle this week.
  • NM State finished fourth in the field in total pars with 171. The Aggies also posted just three combined double bogeys or worse to rank tied for third fewest among the field.
