Juan Carlos “JC” Garzon begins his second season with the NM State women’s soccer team as a volunteer assistant coach.
In addition to volunteering with the Aggies, he is also on the New Mexico Youth Soccer Association staff where he coaches YOP and ODP programs in the state. Garzon recently moved to the Mesilla Valley after spending the last 15 years in Florida.
While in the Sunshine State, he coached at Lake Brantley High School from 2013-17 and took over the program in 2014. In his first year at the helm, Garzon was named the coach of the year after leading the Patriots to its first regional semifinals since 2002. In addition, he was the girls academy head coach for the Orlando City Youth Soccer Club from 2015-17, coaching the U-9, U-11, U-12 and U-14 teams. Garzon also coached with Seminole Youth Soccer from 2011-13.
The Colombian native played in the Central Florida Soccer League for 15 years while making the final cut for Orlando City SC (MLS) as a goalkeeper. In July of 2016, he served as a goalkeepers coach for the prestigious FC Barcelona Soccer Camp.
Before moving stateside, Garzon played in the Colombian semi-pro league (1996-2001) and captured a title in 1999 with the Colombian National Police squad at the Armed Forces International Tournament between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.
Garzon played collegiately at Escuela General Santander – Policía Nacional in Bogotá from 1993-96 and was the Golden Glove Winner at the Colombian Armed Forces Tournament where he won the futsal championship. On top of playing on the soccer team for the national police academy, he also played on the basketball, volleyball, swimming, pentathlon and triathlon teams.
Garzon is married to his wife Raquel and have two kids, Santiago and Tatiana. He holds multiple certifications with NFHS and has a U.S. Soccer Federation D Licence. His wife Raquel (Dr. Garzon) is an extension nutrition and wellness specialist with the college of agricultural, consumer and environmental sciences.
