Aggies Move to 4-0 in WAC Play with Win Over Cougars

Clutch shooting at the free-throw line down the stretch saw NM State edge Chicago State, 70-60, on Saturday.

Editor's Notes: Stats were finally corrected late Saturday night by Chicago State. Tamera William finished with 19 points, one point shy of tying her career-high and was 7-for-7 from the line. The initial postgame stats had William with 20 points and 8-of-8 from the line.

CHICAGO, Ill. – Solid night at the free-throw line and 19 points from Tamera William saw NM State clip Chicago State on the road, 70-60, and move to 4-0 in Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday at the Jones Convocation Center.

William was huge for the Aggies in the final five minutes of play, going 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.

"Tamera was key for us today against an aggressive Chicago State team," head coach Mark Trakh said. "Experience really played a big role down the stretch for her [William], knocking down eight free-throws with the game on the line. Zaire [Williams] gave us great minutes, knocking down key 3-pointers in the game as well as Brooke [Salas] in the first half."

After starting the game 6-of-9 from the floor, four of which came from beyond the arc, NM State (15-3, 4-0 WAC) was 1-of-6 the last 4:28 minutes of the quarter. Chicago State (2-16, 0-4 WAC) used that to its advantage and went on an 8-0 to close the gap to 24-20.

The Aggies began to pull away in the second quarter behind Salas and Davis, who were responsible for 13 of NM State's 20 points in the second frame. With time expiring, Tyler Ellis put in a last-second bucket to give the Aggies a 44-32 lead at the break.

Coming out of the break was a bit tougher for the Aggies, as they only found the bottom of the net four times. Two of those four field-goals came in the final two minutes of the quarter from Williams, who finished with 10 points, and William.

With 9:00 on the clock, CSU's Jasmine Sanders was fouled on a loose ball and knocked down both free-throws to give the Cougars their first lead of the game at 55-54. However, that lead was short-lived as Sasha Weber scored on the ensuing possession to give NM State the lead for good. She finished with 14 points.

With 2:14 left to play, Chicago State's Layne Murphy broke to the basket for a layup and cut the Aggie lead to 62-60.

But, that was as close as the Cougars would get in the game as NM State scored eight-straight points to close out the contest.

The Aggies now return home to the friendly confines of the Pan American Center for a pair of home games where they are 26-1, spanning from last season. First up for NM State will be Seattle U (Jan. 21) on Thursday at 7 p.m. (MT) before entertaining CSU Bakersfield (Jan. 23) on Saturday at 2 p.m.  for its "Pack the Pan Am 2.0" game where tickets are just two dollars.

POSTGAME NOTES: NM State's 15-3 record is the best start since 1987-88 when the Aggies went 26-3…The last time NM State had four players reach double-figures was against Sacramento State…With the win, the Aggies are now 5-0 against Chicago State all-time…NM State moves to 6-0 when outrebounding its opponents…After the weekend, Sasha Weber now has 1,360 career-points  to surpass Sinnamon Garrett (1,344, 2000-04) for 11th all-time at NM State…With her four blocks this weekend, Brianna Freeman now has 72 career blocks, two shy of tying Weber and Vicki Evans for eighth all-time in Aggie history.
