ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A two-minute stretch from the 62nd to the 64th minute was all it took as the New Mexico State women's soccer team fell to Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico Friday night at the UNM Soccer Complex.
Â
The Aggie defense was tested early in the match as UNM fired off 10 shots, five on goal, before
Samantha Afonso was able to take the first shot for NM State at the 18:40 mark. New Mexico continued its attack on the NM State defense the rest of the first half, but Martin and the Aggie defense were there to deny all 18 shots.
Â
With 32:42 on the clock,
Holly Abdelkader raced down the left side of the field and blasted a rocket in between the pipes. However, UNM's Tayler Hammack was there to make the save as both teams headed into the locker room with the match scoreless.
Â
New Mexico State didn't waste any time in the second half as it secured the first corner kick of the game, but it headed out towards the sideline near the Aggie bench.
Â
With 61:11 on the clock and the ball at the left corner of the box, New Mexico's Claire Lynch put a chip shot over the Aggie defense and Martin. The Lobos struck once more two minutes later at the 63:32 mark when a corner kick shot that got deflected out towards the 20-yard line was blasted into the back of the net by Savannah Viola.
Â
Martin finished the match with 15 saves; one shy of tying her single-game saves record set last year at UMKC. The Aggies concluded Friday's game with seven shots to UNM's 38 and was edged 12-2 in corner kick opportunities.
Â
New Mexico State now returns home for a bout against Nevada at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, as the Aggies host "Bark in the Park" day.
Â
