LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Four different players found the back of the net for the New Mexico State women's soccer team as they cruised past Arizona Christian 4-0 in Monday's matinee match-up at the Soccer Athletic Complex.
Â
"We really concentrated on picking up the tempo, connecting and combining on the attacking third," head coach
Freddy Delgado said about the adjustments they needed to make. "I was really happy how we did that. Our outside backs really got forward and combined well. Our forwards and midfielders also synchronized really, really well. Overall I was really happy with how we played today."
Â
NM State (3-9-0) and Arizona Christian (2-3-1, 0-2-0 GSAC) exchanged shots in the early stages of the game with
Aileen Galicia's strike at the 6:52 mark the only one on goal. A corner kick from
Gabby Campbell with 7:43 on the clock didn't result in a goal for NM State as the two teams battled for possession until the 17:20 mark when Campbell connected with Valerie Maestes inside the box to put NM State on top 1-0. Maestas' goal on Monday was the first collegiate goal for the freshman.
Â
After the reset, Maestas had another look on goal, but was just wide of the post. Three shots and a handful of substitutions later,
Audriana Chavez gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead over the Firestorm when she crushed a shot about 35 yards out just over the reach of the ACU goalkeeper with 35:59 on the clock.
Â
Devin Hart had a great look at goal a couple minutes later, but just didn't have enough juice on it to get past Arizona Christian's Serenity Masterson. The Aggie offense continued to attack the ACU defense, but settled for a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Â
In the 54th minute of the match, New Mexico State was awarded a free kick after Campbell was tripped up from behind. Campbell then served a ball to the box where
Mariah Baker headed it in for her first goal of the season and extended the Aggie lead to 3-0.
Â
The Firestorm defense broke down once again at the 73:05 mark when
Tuti Tirado found the back of the net from
Kyleigh Cox's service into the box.
Â
The 4-0 score would hold until the referee whistled the match final, giving the Aggies the win. New Mexico State will get the rest of the week off before beginning Western Athletic Conference play at noon on Friday, Oct. 7.
