LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's tennis team wrapped up the first weekend of the Western Athletic Conference pod matches at home 2-1 with a 5-2 victory on Sunday over UT Rio Grande Valley.
Â
NM State quickly took the lead in doubles action when the Aggies' No. 3 and No. 2 doubles teams claimed victories over their opponents from UTRGV.
Â
Gabrielle Joyce made a rare appearance in singles play and didn't hesitate, dominating the Vaqueros' Amanda Guardia 6-1, 6-2 on court No. 6.
Rimpledeep Kaur gave NM State a commanding 3-0 lead shortly after when she ousted Anastasia Belyaeva 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.
Â
UTRGV got a point back when
Rebecca Keijzerwaard wound up falling on court No. 3 to Dominique Ibarra 6-3, 6-1. However,
Vanessa Valdez's 6-2, 6-1 win on court No. 2 clinched match point for NM State.
Lindsay Harlas would give the Aggies a 5-1 lead before the Vaqueros were able to get another point that would not matter as NM State walked away with the 5-2 win.
Â
The Aggies now hit the road for a pair of matches this weekend, beginning with Wyoming (March 23) before squaring off against Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico (March 25). NM State and the Cowgirls will square off at noon on Thursday at the University of Wyoming Indoor Tennis Complex.
