LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's tennis team completed the sweep of UT Permian Basin on Sunday alongside the men's program with a 7-0 blanking of the Falcons at the NM State Tennis Center.
Â
The win pushed NM State to 10-12 overall on the year and has now reached double-digit wins in all but two seasons in the last 26 seasons (2012-13, 1990-91). The Aggies have now also won four of their last five matches heading into the Western Athletic Conference Championships, which NM State will be hosting April 28-30.
Â
Doubles action went by fairly quickly with NM State only giving up four total points as a team.
Vanessa Valdez and
Rebecca Keijzerwaard first came through for NM State with a 6-1 rout of their foes on court No. 2 before
Rimpledeep Kaur and
Marie-Pier Thiffault captured the doubles point with a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles – also good for the duo's fifth-consecutive victory.
Â
Keijzerwaard didn't need much time in singles action thanks to a white washing of her opponent at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 for her fifth-straight win. The same result would go for
Eli Arnaudova and Thiffault on courts No. 5 and No. 4, respectively, to clinch the match.
Â
Valdez kept the sweep in play later on with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Andrew Villalobos of UTPB (6-13) at No. 2 singles. Kaur completed the sweep the Falcons shortly thereafter when she upended Fernanda Orona 6-1, 6-1 at the top singles position.
At the conclusion of Sunday's match, the NM State women's tennis program also bid farewell to a trio of exiting players in
Gabrielle Joyce, Thiffault and Kaur. Joyce and Thiffault will graduate as seniors while Kaur leaves the program with a year of eligibility remaining to pursue her MBA.

Â
New Mexico State now turns its attention to the WAC Championship, which will be held at the NM State Tennis Center April 28-30. As the No. 2 seed, NM State will get its first crack at redemption on Saturday, April 29, at 9 a.m. (MT) when it squares off against UT Rio Grande Valley (4-14, 2-3 WAC) – who denied the Aggies of their repeat bid in the championship match last season of the conference tournament. Should NM State advance, it'll play for the championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
