GRAMBLING, LA – The New Mexico State women's soccer team continues to dominate as they defeated Grambling State, 1-0, Saturday afternoon. The Aggies are now 3-0-1, making it the best start in program history.
The Aggies faced a tough Grambling State team with a few interesting moments, including an offsides call that prevented the team from getting on the board much earlier. NM State remained strong and in the 79
th minute of the game, junior midfielder
Aileen Galicia knocked in the game-winning goal with the assist from
Mariah Baker.
"We had actually scored a goal earlier off of a set piece, but we were called offsides," head coach
Freddy Delgado said. "We were dangerous on corners and we finally had two or three players that challenged the opponent. Aileen was in the right spot at the right time, pounced on that opportunity and tucked it home."
Despite facing some difficulties, including travel mishaps, the Aggies kept their composure and rallied for the win. Goalkeeper
Dmitri Fong had her second consecutive shutout game with five saves.
"I was proud of our team," Delgado said. "We faced a lot of difficult situations on this trip, including our travel. We played a team who was very physical. Our girls kept their composure and they continued to play. Eventually we were able to break through and get the goal."
NM State heads to Mississippi to take on the Alcorn State Lady Braves Monday, Aug. 28, at noon.
