SEATTLE – The New Mexico State women's soccer team was tripped up by Seattle U, 5-0, in a Western Athletic Conference match at Championship Field in Seattle on Saturday night.
The Aggies (1-10-12, 0-4-0) came out strong defensively, weathering a few early runs from Seattle U without giving up any real opportunities. This led to a few chances for NM State, who found success with
Hannah Leitner spreading the defense out wide, with
Corey Kizer's shot deflected in the 25
th minute.
Then, New Mexico State caught a break when Jessie Ray's try hit the crossbar before a chance on the other end from
Katie Martinez that went wide in the 31
st. Shortly after that, Jessie Ray gave Seattle U its first goal of the match in the 32
nd minute.
Jess McDow almost knotted up the game in the 34
th minute but her shot from distance was saved by the Redhawks.
Seattle U then added onto its lead with a PK in the 40
th minute and the Aggies went into the halftime break trailing 2-0.
Kelly Burton almost started the half with a goal when her volley off a free kick hit the crossbar in the 46
th minute. From there, Seattle U took complete control of the match, adding goals in the 48
th, 50
th and 57
th minutes for the final tally of 5-0.
The Aggies finished the match with 10 shots including shots on goal from McDow, Kizer and
Maddie Franklin.
Dmitri Fong finished with nine saves.
NM State is back in action when it returns to the Mesilla Valley to take on CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 18, at 12 p.m. Fans unable to attend Friday's home match can catch all the action on the
