Â
A Look at the Wolverines
Utah Valley enters Thursday's match with a 5-6-1 overall record and a 0-1-0 record in WAC play after losing to CSU Bakersfield 3-2 on Oct. 6. Last season, the wolverines beat the Aggies 3-0 in Las Cruces.
Â
The Wolverines are paced by sophomore Julianna Carter who leads the squad with six goals through 12 games. She also leads the team in points with 12. Amber Tripp and Jenna Shepard are tied for second on the team in points with eight as both players have recorded three goals and two assists on the season.
Â
Redshirt senior Allie Jara has started 11 games in goal for UVU, amassing a 5-4-1 record. She enters Thursday's contest with a 1.33 goals-against average and a .731 save percentage.
Â
Scouting the Redhawks
Seattle U sits at 1-0-1 in WAC play after a win over Chicago State and a draw at Kansas City with a 5-6-2 overall record. The Redhawks beat the Aggies 4-0 on a rainy day in Las Cruces a season ago.
Â
Senior Jessie Ray leads the Redhawks' offensive attack with 10 points (3g, 4a) while Holly Rothering has also added three goals for six points. Seattle U boasts a balanced offense with 10 different players scoring goals so far this season.
Â
Freshman Madison Waguespack has impressed in her first season in goal for the Redhawks, already picking up one WAC Defensive Player of the Week award (Sept. 2). Entering the weekend, she sits at a 1.58 goals-against average to go along with a .737 save percentage.
Â
Last Time Out
The Aggies hosted Grand Canyon on Sept. 4 and California Baptist on Sept. 6 to open WAC play.
Â
The game against GCU was delayed for an hour and a half due to a lightning delay. After play resumed, GCU raced out to a 2-0 later before the Aggies ramped up the pressure in the second half.
Corey Kizer had back-to-back shots in the 61
st minute that were both saved before she finally broke through with a header in the 75
th minute. However, the Aggies were unable to tie the game before it was called in the 83
rd minute due to darkness.
Â
On Sept. 6, the Aggies and Lancers faced off in a chippy, physical battle at the Soccer Athletic Complex. NM State came out of the gates swinging, with
Shea O'Connor recording two shots on goal in the first six minutes. Both teams would trade possession and scoring chances with neither side able to score. Then, there was a fracas near midfield in the 42
nd minute that saw an Aggie sent off and a Lancer given a yellow and the Aggies went into the locker room down a player and tied at 0-0.
Â
Playing with just 10 players on the pitch, the Aggies conceded a goal to Rola Badawiya in the 60
th minute. Then, in the 77
th minute, with the Aggies trailing, O'Connor stole the ball from a CBU defender and raced towards a breakaway goal. However, the Lancer defender took O'Connor down from behind, earning a red card, and forcing a free kick. The free kick was then cleared by the Lancers. O'Connor had one more chance to tie the game in the 82
nd minute but her shot from six yards was saved and the New Mexico State fell 1-0.
Â
Up Next
The Aggies continue WAC play and return to the Mesilla Valley to take on CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 18, at 12 pm. (MT). As always, students receive free admission with a valid student I.D.
