Aggies Drop Contest with USC

NM State next visits Hawaii for the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi, playing two games beginning Thursday, Sept. 3.

LOS ANGELES – Following a brief respite at home, NM State traveled out west for a Thursday night contest with Southern California. Meeting for the fourth time in the past four seasons, and third in Los Angeles, a sturdy first half was not enough as the Aggies eventually fell by a score of 4-0.
 
Making the third start of her young career, freshman Zoey Gist tallied the first shot of the night for either team after just over two minutes of action. The Tucson, Ariz., native would lead the team in shots on the night with two, while taking the team lead in shots on goal this season with four.
 
However, USC would take control offensively over the rest of the half, tallying 10 shots while also earning a pair of corner kicks.
 
Coming off a week that saw her record 14 saves across two games, including a duo of incredible penalty kick saves less than ten minutes apart, Karolanne Lafortune stood the test of the Trojans, tallying a trio of saves in the first 45 minutes.
 
At the break, USC held the edge in shots (10-1), corner kicks (2-0) and shots on goal (3-0), while the Aggies led in saves (3-0).
 
Lafortune went back to work immediately in half two, totaling more saves in the first 15 minutes (4) than she had in the entire first half. Despite these efforts, a ball by Rhea Moore found the feet of Jordan Hill in the 61st minute, putting USC ahead 1-0.
 
Late-game goals added to the Trojan tally, with the Aggies falling by a final score of 4-0.
 
UP NEXT
NM State will take a short break, returning to action from Hawaii, playing in the OUTRIGGER No Ka Oi, kicking off next Thursday, Sept. 3, against the University of Hawaii. The Aggies will then play former WAC foe and new Big West member Utah Valley in a neutral site match on Sunday, Sept. 6. Thursday's match will be live-streamed on MW+, with stats available for both matches at nmstatesports.com/stats.
