PHOENIX – The New Mexico State swimming and diving team wrapped up day one against Grand Canyon and Air Force in Phoenix on Thursday afternoon.
 
"Today was a mixed bag of performances and in a large field like this we have to all be firing to be successful," said head coach Rick Pratt. "Airam Oliva-Aun really was impressive in the sprint events and our last relay swam really tough to finish the day. We've got to learn from our mistakes and be better tomorrow."
 
Oliva-Aun had a great day in the pool as she captured the 50 Free with a time of 23.88, ahead of teammate Aimee Burton at 24.22. Then, in the 200 IM, Jordan Andrusak (2:08.82) was barely out-touched by Grand Canyon's Alyssa Christianson (2:08.06). Oliva-Aun nearly picked up the second Aggie win of the day but her 51.69 finished just behind Air Force's Mariah Maile (51.65).
 
NM State was then able to wrap up the day with a strong swim in the 400 Free with Burton, Villa Lauren Hemburrow and Rachel Ponte finishing first with a time of 3:33.17.
 
The Aggies are currently trailing Air Force 154.00-88.00 while they trail GCU 139.00-103.00.
 
New Mexico State wraps up its stay in Phoenix starting tomorrow, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. before returning home to take on Northern Arizona on Nov. 22 and 23. The divers will compete at the Houston Diving Invite at the same time.
