LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State baseball team had an impressive opening weekend with a series sweep over the Texas Southern Tigers that saw the Aggies produce 98 runs in just four games. Among all the impressive numbers, the team was led offensively by second baseman Nick Gonzales whose play earned him the nod for Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week and one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week.
 
Gonzales looked to be in midseason form on opening weekend, going 16-for-22 at the plate with a team-high 16 runs batted in and a tie for the team lead with four home runs in the sweep of the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champions.
 
The 2018 WAC Freshman of the Year had a perfect 5-for-5 night on Friday, Feb. 15, with six RBI and a pair of home runs in the 20-2 win. During the doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 16, the Vail, Ariz. native went 8-for-12 with seven runs scored and five RBI in a pair of wins that saw NM State outscore TSU, 62-14. The sophomore then followed that up with a 3-for-5 day on Sunday, Feb. 17, driving in five RBI in a seven-inning, 16-3, victory to clinch the series sweep.
 
Gonzales and the entire New Mexico State baseball team are back in action with another four-game series, Feb. 22-24, when the team plays host to the Yale Bulldogs at Presley Askew Field.
