LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation and the R&A have confirmed three golfers hailing from Thailand to be invited to play in the Women's Amateur Asia Pacific. New Mexico State women's golfer
Pun Chanachai earned the honor to represent her country in the WAAP from April 25-28 at The Royal Golf Club, Japan.
Being a part of the first three selections for the six-person team from her country, Chanachai has been recognized as one of the top-three golfers from Thailand on the World Amateur Golf Rankings. The winner of the WAAP receives an invitation to the 2019 AIG Women's British Open at Woburn Golf Club in Marquess, England and the 2019 Evian Championship at the Evian Resort Golf Club in France, both majors in women's golf.
Chanachai has been a pivotal piece of the NM State women's golf team since her rookie season. The Bangkok, Thailand native was named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2017 and has also been awarded back-to-back WAC Player of the Year honors in her first two seasons in 2017 and 2018. An individual win in the spring opener of her junior season saw Chanachai tie current LPGA golfer and former Aggie Alena Sharp for the most individual wins in program history with five.
In the hunt for the team's fifth WAC title in the last six years, Chanachai and the entire New Mexico State women's golf team gets back in action at the Bruin/Wave Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif. from Feb. 25-26.
