NAMPA, Idaho. – New Mexico State track and field competed at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at the Ford Idaho Center on Friday. The Aggies sit in first heading into the final day of competition.
NM State got points on the board early when
Hannah Smith came away with the gold in the triple jump. The senior posted a mark of 12.44m (40-9.75) on her second attempt, giving the squad the first points of the day.
In the weight throw
Taniya Mitchell walked away with the individual title, throwing 18.51m (60-8.75) to win the crown.
Yemisi Oroyinyin followed closely behind in second, throwing 18.42m (60-05.25).
Taylor Stutely placed fourth with a mark of 17.01m (55-9.75) while
Alyssa Watkins (16.68m, 54-8.75) and
Bristol O'Connor (16.39m, 53-09.25) finished in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Jess Dominguez brought in points for the team in the 5,000m race when the sophomore took fourth with a time of 17:45.02.
Corinne Hanson finished in eight in the event, recording a time of 18:02.87.
In the mile preliminaries,
Julia Yescas ran 5:00.11 for a personal best while also being the top time in the event.
Crissey Amberg followed closely behind in second when she clocked in at 5:06.85.
Asjah Wallace took third in the 60m hurdle preliminaries, running 8.64 to qualify for event finals.
Arniesha Mitchell also qualified for finals on Saturday when she ran 8.94 in the event. A. Wallace also took the top spot in the 200m when she ran 24.49.
In the 400m,
Takiyah Johnson was the top NM State finisher, coming in at fifth with a time of 56.93.
Lanie Whelpley (57.02) and
Camira Haughton (57.13) placed sixth and seventh, respectably, during the event preliminaries.
Keosha Sanders posted a time of 7.53 in the 60m for the top time in the event. Teammate
Brooke Wallace is set to join Sanders in the event final as she placed eighth in the event when she ran 7.76. B. Wallace also qualified for event finals in the 200m as she ran 24.58, placing sixth.
The distance medley finished in fourth when the team of
Richelle Sandin,
Elizabeth Mendoza, Johnson and
Elana Kresl ran 12:25.13.
The team closes its run at the WAC Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 23. The day begins with the women's shot put at 10 a.m. MT. Running events begin with the women's mile finals at 2 p.m.
