LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State football wide receiver Jared Wyatt's meteoric rise continues.

The Aggie redshirt senior was one of 199 semifinalists named for the prestigious National Football Foundation (NFF) William V. Campbell Trophy on Thursday, Oct. 1. The award, considered by many to be the "Academic Heisman," is given to a collegiate football student-athlete with the best combination of academic success, community service and on-field performance.

Wyatt, who began his collegiate career at Bowling Green, caught seven passes for 139 yards (19.9 avg.) and a touchdown in his debut season at NM State one year ago. He recorded a season-high two receptions for a campaign-best 42 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown, at Central Michigan (10/12).

The native of Wylie, Texas, entered the 2020 campaign as one of the Aggies' leading returning receivers. Wyatt, who is majoring in individualized studies, was expected to help captain the offense before the season's postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wyatt was previously recognized as NM State's representative for the Campbell Trophy in August. Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the award must be seniors or graduate students in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

The NFF will announce 12-to-14 finalists in November, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2020 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. Later this year, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 31st Campbell Trophy, having his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000 and receiving his own 25-pound-bronze version of the iconic statue.
