LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Another day, another honor for Nick Gonzales.
The NM State baseball infielder earned a spot on the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award 2020 Watch List, which was released late Tuesday afternoon. The BBCSA is based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity.
Gonzales, who was a finalist for the 2019 award, continues to add to his collection of accolades. This week alone, the native of Vail, Ariz., has been named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Player of the Week by Perfect Game/Rawlings and Hitter of the Week by the Western Athletic Conference.
A unanimous preseason All-American, Gonzales opened up the 2020 campaign by slashing .571/.727/1.571 with four homers and a nation-leading 17 RBI in the four-game series sweep over the Tigers. He extended his on-base streak to 70 games, which dates back to the 2018 season.
He accounted for over half of the Aggies' total runs last weekend, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored in an 11-2 opening-night win before combining to go 3-for-5 with four RBI, three runs scored and five walks in a doubleheader sweep Saturday.
Gonzales' best game of the weekend came in Sunday's series finale. He went 3-for-5, matching a school record with three homers - a two-run shot, a three-run shot and a grand slam - and driving in nine runs.
This year's BBCSA watch list consists of 36 players, representing 16 conferences around the country. The winner of the award will be announced in June and honored at a gala this fall in Fort Worth, Texas.
