NM State freshman puts forth 5-2 one-on-one record in October

Complete WAC Release

DENVER –
Lisa Zhu's name has been synonymous with winning so far this fall and Tuesday afternoon the NM State women's tennis freshman latched on to another victory.

As announced Tuesday morning by the league office, Zhu has been named the WAC Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Month for the month of October.

After beginning her collegiate career with a perfect 3-0 singles record in the month of September, the Beijing, China, product turned in a 5-2 mark in one-on-one action through the Aggies' two events in October.

At the ITA Mountain Regional tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., on Wednesday-Friday, Oct. 13-15, Zhu played her way into the quarterfinal round of the flight two singles bracket. The Aggies' freshman bested Air Force's Alexis Odom (6-1, 6-1), Wyoming's Mihaela Kaftanova (6-1, 2-6, 6-1) and BYU's Helen Jiao (6-2, 4-6, 6-4) before falling in the round of eight against Colorado's Mila Stanjojevic (7-5, 6-3).

Last weekend in Albuquerque, Zhu was the victor in two of the three singles tilts she took part in at the New Mexico Halloween Howl. Through the course of the three-day event, Zhu took out Northern Arizona's Laura Duhl (6-3, 6-4) and New Mexico's Myu Kageyama (6-3, 6-4). Her lone setback came at the hands of Colorado State's Somer Dalla-Bona (7-5, 6-4).

So far this season, Zhu has posted an 8-2 mark in one-on-one action. That singles win total is the highest among all the members of the Aggies roster.

Zhu and the rest of the Aggies are bound for DeLand, Fla., this weekend to wrap up the fall portion of their season. Beginning Friday, NM State will compete in the Stetson Invitational at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The three-day event wraps up Sunday.
