Aggie Divers Head to WAC Championships With Shot at Title

Aggies in second place heading into the diving portion of WAC Championships.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State diving team is set to travel Flagstaff, Ariz., with a chance to capture a WAC Championship from Feb. 25-27 at Wall Aquatic Center. The Aggies will head to Flagstaff in second place after a strong performance from the swimming team at last week's swimming portion of WAC Championships in St. George, Utah.

"The divers and I are thrilled to be here in Flagstaff and have the opportunity to compete. It has been a long season with many twists and turns but we now have to opportunity to showcase all the hard work. These girls have been very disciplined this year with social distancing and following all required protocols in order to make it to this week. This is an excellent facility, and even though it's just the divers here, we know that people all over Aggie nation will be watching and cheering us on from afar."

The Aggie diving tandem of Italia Aranzabal and Taylor Jackson will look to make up ground on Northern Arizona at the three-day diving meet. Aranzabal, a sophomore, is the NM State record holder for the 3m (313.35). Aranzabal also competed at NCAA Diving Zones and the Mexican Olympic Trials last season.

Jackson is in her first season at NM State after transferring from Seton Hall. The senior from Thornton, Colo., is a former Big East Champion in the 3m.

Last week in St. George, Utah, the Aggie swimmers put the Aggies in prime position with a strong showing at WAC Championships. NM State currently sits just eight-and-a-half points out of first place heading into the diving program. Maude Boily-Dufour swept the backstroke events, taking home gold in the 100 Back with a school record 54.04 and the 200 Back with a 1:57.65.
