Aggies Fall to Utah Valley In Penalty Kick Shootout

PHOENIX, Ariz. - In its first WAC Semifinal match since 2014, the NM State women's soccer team (5-12-2) gave an inspired effort against the top-seeded Utah Valley Wolverines, but the Aggies fell 4-3 in the penalty kick shootout in front of a rowdy crowd Thursday afternoon at GCU Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz.

After the Wolverines put up a goal in the first minute, the Aggies began to settle in and counter the Wolverines attack. In the 21st minute. Hannah Leitner sent a perfect ball over the top of the Wolverine defense to Corey Kizer, who collected and sent the ball right past the goalie to tie the game. This was Kizer's second goal of the tournament and her third of the year.

The Aggies continued to turn up the pressure as the game went on. Utah Valley was able to get some good looks early in the first half, but Dmitri Fong was spectacular with five saves alone in the second half. The Aggies had a chance in the 83rd minute on a penalty kick, but it sailed wide left leaving the game tied after regulation. Neither team was able to get much going in the first overtime. Annalise Pacheco took the first shot for the Aggies in the second overtime off of a corner but couldn't convert.

The Aggies would then play in its first ever penalty kick shootout in program history. Each team was unable to connect on the first try. The Wolverines were able to get on the board with its second shooter, but Jocelyn Tallent-Burleson evened it up at one. Xitlaly Hernandez and Bella Garcia each found the back of the net for the Aggies, but the Wolverines came out on top, winning the shootout 4-3.
