EUGENE, Ore. - There will be an NM State presence at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Saturday night at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., NM State women's track & field volunteer assistant coach Rachel Dincoff put forth a clutch toss of 60.21 meters on her fifth of six throws to push herself into third place in the finals of women's discus event at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. With that throw, Dincoff earned the third and final coveted spot on the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Team. Of the 12 competitors who made it to the finals in the women's discus throw, only the top three would move on to represent their country in Japan.
Ahead of her fifth throw of the night, Dincoff sat in fourth place through her first four throws. Through those first four tosses, Dincoff's best distance was 59.37 meters had her one spot behind the Olympic qualifying spot. Her clutch throw on her fifth try of the night bettered Kelsey Card's throw of 59.37 meters and pushed the Aggie volunteer assistant coach into the Olympics.
Joining Dincoff as the U.S. Track & Field squad's three women's discus competitors are Valerie Allman (69.92 meters) and Micaela Hazlewood (62.54 meters).
Friday night, Dincoff punched her ticket to Saturday's women's discus finals by registering a distance of 61.63 meters - the second-longest throw of the qualifying round behind Allman's qualifying round hurl of 70.01 meters.
Dincoff has served on the Aggies' coaching staff in a volunteer assistant role since 2017, specializing in her work with the team's throws. Under Dincoff's watch, NM State has had two student-athletes move on to the NCAA West Preliminary meet including Taniya Mitchell (hammer throw, 2019) and Yemisi Oroyinyin (shotput, 2021).
Before signing on with head coach Doug Reynolds' staff, Dincoff was an All-American for Auburn in women's track & field. She captured Second Team All-American honors in the shotput during the outdoor track & field season of 2014 by posting a 16.08-meter toss in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. That mark was the 14th-best of all competitors at the national meet that season.
