Leitner's Brace Pushes Aggies Past Nevada

NM State continued the best start in program history with a 3-2 win over former conference rival Nevada.

RENO, Nev. – Hannah Leitner scored twice and the New Mexico State soccer team kept the best start in program history rolling with a 3-2 win against former WAC rival Nevada in Reno in on Sunday afternoon. NM State pushed its record to 3-0 for the first time in program history.

"What a tremendous weekend, two get two results with all sorts of unknowns and travel, the grittiness of our team is really starting to come to the forefront," said head coach Rob Baarts. "We're understanding how to keep a lead. When we needed a goal, we put our heads down and got a goal."

The Aggies wasted no time scoring their first goal as Hannah Leitner raced past Nevada's outside back and found Megan Ormson who finished her first goal of the season in the fourth minute. Leitner continued to cause problems for Nevada's back line as she burned them down the right sideline and put NM State ahead 2-0 in the 10th minute. For the first multi-goal game of her career.

NM State was able to absorb the Wolfpack's attack until Nevada got on the board in the 27th on a 20-yard strike from Trinity Sandridge. However, neither side would score again before the half and NM State took a 2-0 lead into the break.

Much like the first half, the Aggies struck quickly in the second with Leitner putting away her second goal in the 57th minute. Gia Valenti played a ball to Leitner who torched Nevada's defense and scored on the breakaway. Although, the Wolfpack would quickly make it a one score game again following a goal in the 62nd minute.

Nevada had a good look in the 69th minute but Makenna Gottschalk was there to make the save to keep NM State ahead. From there, the Aggies locked in defensively and cruised to  the 3-2 final.

The Aggies took eight shots on the afternoon with five of those on-goal while Nevada Finished with seven total shots with five also on-goal.

NM State now heads to the Lone Star State to take on Texas on Thursday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. (MT) before heading to San Antonio for a showdown with UIW on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 10 a.m.

NOTES
  • This was the Aggies' first win over a Mountain West School since 2017 when they took down UNM. It was also the first win over a MWC program under Rob Baarts.
  • NM State's 3-0 record represents the best start in program history.
  • Hannah Leitner registered the 16th multi-goal game from an Aggie, joining current teammate Alexa Barrera.
