SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Led by
Aidan Thomas and
Scott Rescigno, the NM State Aggies men's golf program used a two-under par second round to sit in second place after two rounds of the Lone Star Invitational, hosted by UTSA at TPC San Antonio.
Thomas shook off an opening hole triple-bogey and opening round 78 to fire a -2, 70 in the second round, while Rescigno fired an even-par, 72 in the second round to also close the opening 36 holes tied at +4.
Garrison Smith shot rounds of 74 and 75 to sit at +5 for the tournament. Smith is joined by
Alvaro Morales and
Cole Grossl at +5 overall.
Grossl rebounded from a tough opening round 79 to fire a two-under round of 70 during the afternoon, while Morales shot rounds of 74 and 75.
After 36 holes, the Aggies sit in solo second at +13 as a team, one shot clear of new WAC member Lamar (+14) who resides in third. Sun Belt foes Louisiana and Texas State sit tied for fourth at +16, while UT Arlington (+23), Oral Roberts (+26), Incarnate Word (+30), Houston Baptist (+35) and UT Martin (+40) round out the top-10.
Host UTSA (-3) fired an -8, 280 during Monday's second round to take a commanding 15-shot lead into Tuesday's final round.
Michael Rome (UTSA), Hunter Bott (UTSA) and Paul Gonzalez (UTA) sit in a three-way atop the individual leaderboard.
