NM State Suffers 2-0 Setback Saturday Night at Utah Valley

Aggies outshot 20-8, incur first WAC setback of the season

OREM, Utah - Hoping to pick up the program's first-ever victory against Utah Valley, the NM State women's soccer team instead dropped a 2-0 decision to the Wolverines Saturday night at Clyde Field.

With the loss, NM State drops to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in WAC action. The Aggies also fall to 0-9-3 all-time against Utah Valley.

SCORING SUMMARY
30' | After Makenna Gottschalk kept the Wolverines at bay time and time again, the home team was able to sneak one past the senior's defenses. Nicole Ray pushed her fourth goal of the season past NM State's netminder and that score would hold up as the game-winner. Ray's header came from a difficult angle at the mouth of the goal.
60' | Just minutes after the Aggies' second yellow card of the match, Utah Valley added their second - and final - goal of the game. Sadie Brockbank took a pass, centered it and won a one-on-one battle with Gottschalk by booting the ball past the right arm of the NM State netminder.

KEY PERFORMERS/STATISTICS OF NOTE
• NM State was outshot by a 20-8 margin by Utah Valley. In all, the Wolverines put 11 tries on target compared to just two by the Aggies.
• Gottschalk did all she could between the pipes in order to try and keep the Aggies within striking distance. The senior amassed nine saves in the setback, giving her an even 100 for her NM State career. Gottschalk is now the sixth netminder in NM State women's soccer history with 100 or more career saves.
• The Aggies' goalkeeper set the tone early, making a save on a penalty kick try by Utah Valley in the game's first 10 minutes.
• Both of the Aggies' shots on net came off the feet of Xitlaly Hernandez. NM State's junior forward put on shot on target in the 20th minute and another in the 56th minute to help the Aggies apply pressure.
• The Aggies did not attempt a corner kick in the WAC setback while Utah Valley registered 13. None of the Wolverines' set pieces resulted in goals, however.
• A chippy contest throughout, officials passed out three yellow cards throughout the 90-minute bout.

QUOTABLE | HEAD COACH ROB BAARTS
"Our team worked hard tonight. I would like to see a greater commitment to get forward and attack as a team. Utah Valley played a very attacking style of play that caused our team to not get forward as much as I'd like. The members of our back line were solid and Makenna had great save on their penalty kick attempt. We have to learn from this and bring the pain at home this weekend."

COMING UP NEXT
• For its first WAC match in Las Cruces this season, the NM State women's soccer team welcomes Seattle U to the Land of Enchantment. Friday night's kickoff between the Aggies and Redhawks has been set for 7:00 p.m.
