Aggies Amid Top-Ten at Border Olympics after Day One

LAREDO, Texas – After the first two rounds of the Border Olympics, the NM State men's golf team finds itself inside the top-ten. Hosted at the Laredo Country Club, the Aggies used a strong second round to move up the leaderboard.
 
After a slow first round, sophomore Aidan Thomas found his stroke, shooting five-under (67) in the second round. Thomas' second round 67 was the best of any individual in the 14 team field on Monday.
 
Back in his home state, the junior Texan Garrison Smith led the Aggies throughout the day and sits tied for 29th after two rounds. During his first round, Smith shot an even 72 to pace the Aggies for the remainder of the day.
 
Competing as an individual, Trey Diehl shot a 155 on the day, finished tied for 67th overall. On the individual side, Diehl's score marks the 12th-best on the day after a second round 76.

Round One
  • On the back nine, Garrison Smith finished one-under to shoot an even 72, which led the way for the Aggies.
  • Mixing in a pair of birdies, Matthew Jackman shot a 75 through 18.
  • Joseph Robson sprinkled four birdies throughout his first round to shoot 76 through the first 18 holes. Robson birdied a pair of the final three holes to finish two-over on the back nine.
  • With birdies on 17 and 18, Alvaro Morales finished with a first round total of 77.
Round Two
  • Between holes nine and sixteen, Thomas tallied six birdies to drop his score to five-under (67). Thomas recorded three consecutive birdies on holes nine, ten, and eleven.
  • After shooting a 77 in the first round, Morales cut his second round score down to a 75. Morales carded four birdies
  • Smith and Jackman both finished their second round with a 76. After his strong first round, Smith finished the day tied for 29th on the leaderboard.
