Aggies Chop Down Three School Records on Second Day of WAC Championships

NM State in fourth place with two packed days still to come in Houston.

HOUSTON – The Aggies had several shining moments on day two of the WAC Championships as they turned in three new school records and just as many podium finishes on Thursday evening at the CRWC Natatorium.

After the first two days of competition, the Aggies find themselves slotted in fourth place with 145 points as a team.

The evening started with a bang as they posted two school records in just the first event on the schedule. Aimee Burton led the charge in the 200-yard free relay as her lead-off split of 22.80 seconds set a new Aggie record in the 50 free. The previous set by Aliena Schmidtke stood for 10 years as posted a 22.82 in the 2011-12 season. Burton's teammates then continued to fly in the pool as Oliva-Aun, Villa and Kocijan combined to help the Aggies post the fastest time in school history at 1:31.94. This eclipsed the previous record of 1:32.19 set by this same unit just two seasons ago.

Lindsay Puhalski then continued to maintain the Aggie presence in the top three as she finished second in the 200 individual medley and notched a new NM State record in the process. Her time of 2:01.31 nudged the previous record set by Dorottya Lennert in 2015-16 by three-tenths of a second.

Aimee Burton's name then appeared among the top finishers once again when she claimed third place in the 50 free – registering a time of 22.91. This would mark the third time Burton would be the recipient of a WAC medal in just the first two days of competition.

Meanwhile, in the 500 free, senior Katherine Harston posted the Aggies top time as she picked up a fourth-place finish in the consolation final by way of reaching the final wall at 5:00.98.

In the lone diving event of the day, Italia Aranzabal landed in fourth among competitors in the 3-meter consolation final as she posted a score of 256.50.

"Despite missing a couple of opportunities in prelims today, tonight was a lot of fun, filled with program firsts," head coach Rick Pratt noted. "Breaking three school records was encouraging and those performances kept our energy high throughout the session. We've got to come ready to race in the morning and take advantage of every opportunity."

The Aggies return to action on Friday for day three of the WAC Championships with prelims getting underway at 9:30 a.m. and finals kicking off at approximately 5 p.m. Prelims can be found on wacdigitalnetwork.com and finals will be shown on ESPN+.
