Women Place Fifth, Men Place Seventh at Texas Tech Open

LUBBOCK, Texas. – The NM State men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Lubbock, Texas this weekend for the Texas Tech Open hosted by non-other than Texas Tech University.

The men are coming off a third-place finish at the Lori Fitzgerald Open two weeks ago in Las Cruces, which saw a number of runners make their collegiate debut. On the women's side, they are coming off a first-place finish at the Lori Fitzgerald Open, which saw four runners finish in the top-ten.

This week, both teams faced the challenge of going up against some of the premier cross country programs in the country. In the end, the women came out of it with a fifth-place finish tallying 140 team points - the men finished seventh with a score of 188.

MEN'S RACE

Anekin Hetman crossed the finish line at 25:14.07 coming in seventh place out of 166 runners. This is the seventh top-ten finish in Hetman's career and his second consecutive top-ten finish.
• Freshman Collins Yego was the next Aggie to cross the finish line. He placed 37th with a time of 26:28.3
• Following Yego was the pair of Micah Too and Dillan Sanchez. Too finished 61st with a 28:00.45 time, and Sanchez was right behind him crossing at 28:07.00 finishing 63rd.
Nick Allred finished 69th with a official time of 28:16.0
Nick Ortiz crossed at 28:25.44 placing 73rd
Diego Logan-Behshad placed 85th recording a time of 29:03.56
• Zack Willcox ended his race in 88th with a time of 29:13.7
Christian Barreto finished 93rd crossing the line at 29:34.15

WOMEN'S RACE

Richelle Sandin finished atop the Aggie runners for the second meet in a row placing ninth out of 105, finishing the race with a time of 22:27.90. This is also the second consecutive week meet she finishes a meet in the top ten..
Kayla O'Connell rounded out the top-25 crossing the finish line at 23:30.30.
• El Paso native Vanessa Gracian crossed the line at 24:19.80 placing 32nd
• Placing 37th was Mia Regan coming in at 24:28.20
•Another El Paso native, Jordan Torres, placed 41st finishing with a time of 24:41.70.
Leah Clark ran a time of 25:05.60, placing 47th.
Angela Korte came in at 26:40.80 placing 70th.

"This course was a tougher course for sure, but I believe it plays to our advantage in comparison to other teams. We train on a variety of surfaces which helps us for times like this. Personally, I like the hills and really having to grind it out. I stayed patient early and kept the momentum towards the middle to the end of the race. I was able to chase down quite a bit of people throughout the race. Thanks for the support Aggie Nation!"


COMING UP NEXT

• NM State M/W Cross Country teams will be back in two weeks when they head to Tucson, Arizona for the Dave Murray Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona. That meet is scheduled for Friday, September 30. After that, the Aggies will only have one more meet before heading to Nacogdoches, Texas for the 2022 WAC Cross Country Championships on October 29.
