Aggies Head West for the Willie Williams Classic

NM State looks to build on strong showing at WT Spring Break Open

LAS CRUCES, N.M. –
Coming off of last week's impressive showing in Canyon, Texas at the West Texas Spring Break Open, NM State heads west for the Willie Williams Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona. The two-day meet in Tucson begins on Friday, March 24th, concluding Saturday, March 25th. This is the first of two meets the Aggies will compete at in the Grand Canyon State, returning to Tucson for the Desert Heat Classic (April 29th) prior to the 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 11-13th in Nacogdoches, Texas.
 
The Starting Line
  • The Aggies are no stranger to Drachman Stadium, home of Arizona track & field – NM State has competed there six times since the 2017 season.
  • This is the first of two meets the Aggies will run at Drachman Stadium, returning on April 29th for the Desert Heat Classic.
  • NM State will match up with 14 other Collegiate teams at the event including Arizona, GCU, Northern Arizona and, UTEP and Utah State among others. The Crimson & White open the two-day meet with the Javelin toss on Friday at 4 p.m. (MDT).
 
Back Track | West Texas Spring Break Open | 3.17
  • NM State captured the top five spots in the 200m dash and seven of the top 11. Jhana Downie led the way, while an unattached Lanie Whelpley finished in second. Sierra BrewerAliyah Logan and T'Erica Boyd rounded out the top-five. Freshman Jody Blackwood posted the best finish in her career with a seventh-place result, while also turning in a new personal best. Breanna Moss crossed the line 11th to complete the swarm of Aggies at the top of the leaderboard.
  • Emily Birch eclipsed the field in the hammer throw, setting a personal best with a mark of 60.08m – while also tallying the first top-finish in her career.
  • Rebecca Green captured a gold medal finish in the shotput with a mark of 14.12m – her first top finish of 2023 and third career top-placement in the event. 
  • Mariah Humphrey tallied a top-finish in the javelin toss, posting a mark of 39.56m; her fifth career first-place result.
'Round the Region
  • During the outdoor track & field season, the top-48 student-athletes in their respective regions get invited to the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, California (May 24-27th), a precursor to the NCAA Championships held at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field in Austin, Texas (June 7-10th).
  • Following their performances at the West Texas Spring Break Open, multiple Aggies are currently in position to qualify.

One Year Ago… | Mar. 24-26, 2022 | Aztec Invitational
  • Last year at this time, the Aggies traveled to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State University.
  • For the second consecutive week, freshman Phethisang Makhethe took the top prize in the hammer throw, recording a distance of 60.22 meters.
  • A trio of Aggies found themselves in the top-five of the 5000m, headed by Maggie Gibbs who took first place with a time of 16:51.84, crushing her previous best by over 40 seconds (17:35.24).
  • Jhana Downie set a new personal best in the 400m taking third place with a time of 54.77, eclipsing the mark she posted at the 2022 WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships (55.64) while also matching her previous best finish in the event.
