LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After a two day pit stop in the Grand Canyon State, the NM State track & field team is preparing to head to multiple meets across two states: heading to the Mike Fanelli Tack Classic and Stanford Invitational in the San Francisco area of California - and the Bobcat Invitational and Texas Relays in the Austin region of Texas. This is the first multi-meet week for the Aggies this outdoor season, and their first meets in the state of California on the year. NM State will compete in five other meets this season prior to the 2023 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 11-13
th in Nacogdoches, Texas.
The Starting Line
- The Aggies are plenty acquainted with the Golden and Lone Star states - competing in the areas 22 times over the past five seasons.
- NM State has not appeared at the Bobcat Invitational or the Texas Relays since the 2019 season.
- The Crimson & White will compete in multi-meets once more this season; heading to the Mt. SAC relays / Bryan Clay Invitational / Beach Invitational next week in Los Angeles.
Back Track | Willie Williams Classic | 3.24-25
- Terice Steen ran away for the competition en route to a first-place finish in the 400m hurdles, setting a personal best with a time of 59.25. Not only did Steen break a personal best – she also managed to break the school record, eclipsing her own time of 59.38 at the 2021 Masked Rider Open.
- Jhana Downie dazzled in the 200m dash, taking second with a wind adjusted time of 23.76 (-0.5 m/s). The junior from Sunrise, Florida has not finished outside the top-ten in the finals of any event (indoor or outdoor) since the Mt. SAC Relays in April of last year. She also recorded her second win of the weekend, this time taking her talents to the 400m dash, crossing the line with a time of 52.93. Not only does this time represent a personal best, it places her third on the all-time records for the event.
- The 4x400 relay team of Terice Steen, T'Erica Boyd, Jhana Downie and Jahnya Hill teamed up to finish in second place with a time of 3:44.74, good for eighth in the all-time NM State record book.
- No stranger to top-five finishes in her career, Makiya Moore led the Aggies in the discus toss, finishing in fourth-place with a final distance of 48.81m (160-1"). This is the second-straight week she has earned a top-five placement in the event.
'Round the Region
- During the outdoor track & field season, the top-48 student-athletes in their respective regions get invited to the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, California (May 24-27th), a precursor to the NCAA Championships held at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field in Austin, Texas (June 7-10th).
- Following the first two weeks of the season, multiple Aggies are currently in position to qualify.
