Aggies Build Commanding Lead on Day One of Herb Wimberly Memorial

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NM State returned to action on Monday morning as they welcomed 14 programs to the NM State Golf Course for the Herb Wimberly Memorial. Following several strong performances, the Aggies sit atop the team leaderboard and will enter the final round of play with a healthy eight-stroke lead.
 
The Aggies combined to post a 54-hole score of 549 (-19) and will look to maintain the lead on Tuesday when they seek their fifth consecutive team title at their home event. Individually, the Aggies were led by a quartet of Aggies who finished the day inside the top six on the leaderboard.
 
At the top, Javier Delgadillo and Mateo Payán fought their way to a tie for first place after 36 holes with each Aggie carding identical first and second round scores as the two posted a pair of 66s in round one and a pair of 70s in round two. The scores of 5-under on the first 18 marked the lowest 18-hole score of the day among the 84-man field. The 66 also marks the lowest 18-hole score of the season for both Delgadillo and Payán.
 
Meanwhile, Aidan Thomas is just one stroke off the lead after shooting a 67 (-3) in the morning before returning to submit a 70 (-1) in the afternoon. For Thomas, this marks the third time that he has competed in this event and has finished tied for first once and solo third once.
 
Alexandre Bauduin would be the final Aggie in the top 10 as he posted scores of 70 (-1) and 68 (-3) in the first and second rounds, respectively. In the second round, Bauduin got out to a fast start as he birdied two of the first five holes.
 
Senior Ethan Klose ended the day just outside of the top 10 as he will enter Tuesday in a tie for 11th place after ended the day with a 36-hole score of 141 (-1). Meanwhile, Vari Mariscal and Lance Christensen each ended the day at even par to close out the second round in a tie for 15th.
