Pinaieva Picks Up CUSA Athlete of the Week Honors

| By:

Sophomore from Brovary, Ukraine, led the way for the Aggies last weekend.

DALLAS – Wednesday morning, the Conference USA office announced Anna Pinaieva has been named the Conference USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week – making her the first-ever Aggie to claim a CUSA honor since the program joined the league last summer.

Last week, Pinaieva finished 1-1 in both doubles and singles play to lead the way for Aggies during their two-match stretch in Montana where they collided with Montana State on Saturday before taking on Montana on Sunday.

While in Big Sky Country, Pinaieva served as the lone Aggie to earn wins in both doubles and singles play over the weekend. Against Montana State, she joined forces with Dora Kurdi to knock off the Bobcats' No. 1 tandem to help the Aggies secure the doubles point. In the match, Pinaieva and Kurdi earned a 6-3 win over Kelsey Phillips and Hailey Murphy who entered the weekend with a team-best five doubles wins this season.

On Sunday, the sophomore picked up a hard fought 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 victory to serve as one of two Aggies to earn a win in singles play against Montana – defeating the Bobcats' Paula Dougherty.

With the two wins, Pinaieva now sits at 8-5 in singles play to lead all Aggies this season while posting a record of 6-7 in doubles play to rank second on the NM State squad. In total, this is Pinaieva's second athlete of the week award of her career as she was also named WAC Singles Player of the Week during her freshman campaign.

Pinaieva and the Aggie team will return to action on Friday, March 29, when they host CUSA foe Middle Tennessee in what will be the team's final home match of the season. The Aggies and Blue Raiders are set to begin play at 2:30 p.m. MT with Senior Day ceremonies taking place ahead of the match.
