ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Aggies generated 15 shots and eight corner kicks but couldn't find the breakthrough in a 4-0 setback to rival New Mexico on Sunday at the UNM Soccer Complex. The loss dropped NM State to 1-7-0 on the season despite one of their most aggressive attacking displays of the year
The Crimson and white pressed early and often, creating 11 first-half shots and forcing seven saves from UNM's goalkeeper Jasmin Gonzalez-Rutt.
Andrea Alvarenga and
Bianca Chacon each put efforts on target during a flurry of chances late in the first half, while
Blakley Edgar and
Jaiden McClellan also tested the Lobo defense before the break. Still, New Mexico capitalized on its opportunities, building a 3-0 lead before halftime.
Valerie Guha recorded two saves in nearly 80 minutes of action, while
Karolanne Lafortune entered in the closing stretch to finish out the match. NM State kept pushing until the final whistle, winning a late corner and nearly pulling one back in the 89th minute, but UNM added its fourth goal earlier in the second half to put the result out of reach. Despite the loss, the Aggies showed improvement in possession and attacking rhythm that they will look to carry into the start of conference play.
The Aggies will remain on the road this week as the squad looks to face Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. MT.
