LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men's golf team completed day one of action at the annual Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate at the NMSU Golf Course on Monday. The Aggies took advantage of home field and had a strong opening two rounds that saw the team register a team score of 288-292—580 (+12), good for first place.
Individual play for NM State was led by
Mike McGilton whose second round total was the best 18-hole score of the tournament and his day-one saw a 74-67—141 (-1) put the Aggie in first place among 75 golfers.
Tadhg Campbell followed closely behind at three-over with a 72-73—145 (+3) to sit in a tie for sixth place.
Two more NM State golfers also finished day one in the top-10 as
Cameron Gambini and
Hogan Molthan each fired a 147 (+5) and tied for 10
th place.
Davis Chung rounded out the Aggie starting lineup with a 36-hole total of 154 (+12) to tie for 53
rd.
As for the individuals,
Tanvir Kahlon had a strong first day of play shooting a 147 (+5) to tie for 10
th.
Cooper Donahue had a top-20 score at 148 (+6) and is tied for 18
th.
Niall Powell followed up at 149 (+7) to tie for 25
th, while
Ryo Harada and
Tristin Goodwin were one stroke behind at 150 (+8) and are tied for 32
nd. Individuals
Tyler Svendson and
Garrison Smith shot a 153 (+11) to tie for 43
rd. Then
Thomas Tulk came in with a 154 (+12) to tie for 53
rd.
At the end of day one, NM State sits atop the leaderboard of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate at 580 (+12), Oral Roberts is in second-place with a team total of 584 (+16) and UTEP rounds out the top-three shooting a 585 (+17).
The final round of play at the Herb Wimberly is set to be completed on Tuesday, Oct. 16, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. MT. Live scoring for the event can be followed on
