ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's tennis team put together a strong first day at the UNM Halloween Howl on Friday, earning a doubles victory and splitting two singles contests.
The Aggies started the day off against Colorado State in doubles action.
Lindsay Harlas and
Harsha Challa took down their opponents from CSU 7-5 before
Neus Torregrosa and
Gavi Kalaga fell in their doubles match 6-2. Calra Rizea and
Yadira Rubio were able to secure the victory for NM State with a 6-4 victory over their Rams' counterparts.
In singles action, New Mexico State started off against Illinois State. After Harlas fell on court one 2-6, 4-6, Challa and Torregrosa picked up 6-3, 6-1 and 7-6, 6-2 victories respectively. Kalaga then dropped a three-set match before Rubio (4-6, 6-5, 6-4) and Rizea (6-3, 6-3) wrapped up the victory for the Aggies.
Next, NM State took on rival New Mexico in singles action. After Harlas, Challa and Torregrosa went down on courts one, two and three, Kalaga was able to notch a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over her UNM counterpart. Rubio then dropped her match on five before Rizea earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court six.
The Aggies are back in action tomorrow, Oct. 27, as they take on UNM in doubles before matching up with Iowa State and Colorado State for singles action. NM State wraps up the 2018 UNM Halloween Howl on Sunday, Oct. 28, as it takes on UNM and Illinois State in doubles play.
