Aggies Set for Showdown in the Lone Star State

NM State women’s basketball hits the road to take on WAC foe UTRGV on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m. MT.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's basketball team travels to the Lone Star State to take on Western Athletic Conference opponent UT Rio Grande Valley on Feb. 3. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. MT.

SCOUTING THE VAQUEROS
NM State enters the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Saturday to take on a Vaquero team that sits at 11-10 overall and 1-5 in WAC play. Most recently, UTRGV took down Chicago State at home to end a six-game losing streak.
 
Quynne Huggins leads the Vaqueros in scoring with 10.0 points per game. Laura Van Tilburg is the leader on the boards with 5.8 rebounds through 21 contests and also has totaled 26 of the team's 49 blocked shots.
 
UTRGV has played their best basketball at the end of each half. The Vaqueros have outscored opponents in the second (321-308) and fourth quarters (379-347) en route to the best non-conference record among WAC teams.
 
ANOTHER ONE
The Western Athletic Conference announced the basketball players of the week on Monday, Jan. 29. New Mexico State women's basketball guard Brooke Salas earned her second player of the week honor this season after a dominant performance in a weekend win over UMKC.
 
Salas led the Aggies to their fifth WAC win to keep NM State atop the conference standings. Against Kansas City, she was 10-for-13 from the field with a pair of three-pointers and a pair of free throws for 24 points, also adding 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
 
The junior was also aggressive on the defensive end with three blocks and three steals in a 70-62 win. She ranks second in the WAC in scoring during conference play with 21.8 points per game and is the leading rebounder against league opponents with 9.7 rebounds per game. Her .560 shooting percentage from three-point range in also a league best during WAC play.
 
LEADER OF THE WAC
NM State remains atop the WAC standings with an 11-9 overall record and 5-1 mark in league play. As a team, the Aggies rank first in the conference in field goal percentage (.426), defensive rebounds per game (26.5) and blocked shots (96). In league play, New Mexico State leads the WAC in scoring offense (67.5), blocked shots (27), and three-point field goal percentage defense (.280).
 
Individually, Zaire Williams posts a conference-best 5.2 assists per game. Brooke Salas ranks second in the league in scoring at 20.0 points per game. Salas also leads the WAC in blocked shots (38). Monique Mills leads the WAC in 3-point field goal percentage (.400) followed by Salas (.396) in second.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The New Mexico State women's basketball team played host to Western Athletic Conference foe UMKC at the Pan American Center on Saturday, Jan. 27. After winning the tip and scoring the opening basket the Aggies cruised to victory, now having not trailed for eight straight quarters of play, in a 70-62 win over the Roos.
 
Salas led play for NM State posting her sixth double-double of the year with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Pack also had 17 points in 34 minutes of play. Solid defensive play with 30 defensive rebounds, as well as seven blocks and seven steals helped secure the win for the Aggies.
 
UP NEXT
Following the contest against UT Rio Grande Valley, the team remains on the road with a west coast trip to take on CSU Bakersfield at 8 p.m. MT on Thursday, Feb. 8. The Aggies then travel to Phoenix, Ariz. for a WAC match-up against Grand Canyon at 2 p.m. on Feb. 10.
