TEMPE, Ariz. – The New Mexico State women's tennis team fell at No. 50 Arizona State Wednesday afternoon 4-0 at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Â
Doubles play didn't start great for the Aggies as they went up against stout competition. The No. 3 doubles team of
Chloe Gavino and
Rebecca Keijzerwaard wasn't able to get past ASU's 65th-ranked team on court No. 3 and fell 6-1.
Harsha Challa and
Gavi Kalaga were tested by Arizona State's (8-8) tandem of Lauryn John Baptiste and Ilze Hattingh – who were ranked second in the country – and fell 6-1 not too far after.
Â
Down 1-0, the Aggies (8-7) saw their deficit grow in singles play when Keijzerwaard battled Hatting, who is ranked No. 109 in singles by the ITA, at the top singles position and fell 6-0, 6-1. Challa faced off against Tereza Kolarova on court No. 3 but couldn't hold her off and lost 6-0, 6-1 as well. Arizona State closed out the match when
Yadira Rubio was bested by Savannah Slaysman on court No. 5 6-4, 6-1.
Â
New Mexico State will now wrap up the day with a 3 p.m. (MT) match against Mesa CC before wrapping up the road trip on Thursday, March 28, at 4 p.m. against Paradise Valley CC.
