LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State baseball continues to see its players haul in the awards this week, this time with Nick Gonzales, Joey Ortiz, Tristen Carranza and Tristan Peterson earning National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-America accolades.
 
The high-powered Aggie offense finished the year among the best of the best in Division I and is backed up by its plethora of awards. Four players earning All-America honors is the most in program history with the 2018 squad setting the previous record at three (Jonathan Groff, Kyle Bradish, [Nick] Gonzales). Gonzales, Ortiz and Carranza were named to the second-team while Peterson was a third-team selection.
 
This is the fourth All-American nod for Gonzales and ninth overall in his young career. So far, the sophomore second baseman has earned All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America, Perfect Game and now the NCBWA.
 
Nationally, Gonzales led the country in batting average (.432), third in slugging percentage (.773), fourth in hits (95), fourth in runs scored (80), fifth in RBI (80), fifth in on-base percentage (.532), sixth in total bases (170) and eighth in sac flies (8).
 
Ortiz, who became the program's highest draft pick ever on June 4th and a Brookes Wallace Award finslist, led the country in hits (106) and runs scored (85) while checking in at second in triples (10), third in batting average (.422), third in RBI (84), fourth in doubles (25), fourth in total bases (175) and 19th in slugging percentage (.697). This is the second All-America selection for Ortiz this season after earning Collegiate Baseball All-America honors back in May.
 
Carranza finished his senior campaign ranked ninth in hit by pitch (21), 10th in RBI (73), 12^th in slugging percentage (.719), 16th in triples (6), 17th in on-base percentage (.500), 19th in home runs (20), 20th in total bases (151), 22nd in sac flies (7) and 25th in runs scored (67) among Division I players across the country.
 
Peterson concluded his first season in the Crimson & White batting .400 at the dish – placing him 14th in the country. The Tucson, Ariz., native was also nationally ranked second in RBI (90), fourth in slugging percentage (.769), ninth in on-base percentage (.520), 15th in homers (20), 18th in runs (69) and 25th in total bases (150).
