First Impressions
A Number of student-athletes made their debut in the Crimson and White over the weekend with transfers
Eliudth Gonzalez and
Shea O'Connor and freshmen
Hannah Leitner,
Hannah Rivera,
Maddie Franklin,
Amanda Aleman,
Jordan Gregory and
Andrea Ridgely getting action on the pitch.
Â
O'Connor had arguably the best debut, as the Oregon State transfer netted a goal in her very first game with NM State, a 3-1 loss to ACU. Gonzalez also impressed as she assisted
Alexa Barrera's 70
th minute goal in the Aggies' 1-1 draw against Wyoming while Leitner started both matches.
Â
Scouting the Broncos
The Aggies (0-1-1) and Broncos (2-0-0) have squared off four times, with Boise State leading the series 3-1. Last season in Las Cruces, Boise State defeated NM State 3-2 in double overtime. The Broncos' Raimee Sherle recorded a hat trick, including netting the game winner in the second overtime. Boise State also won a share of the Mountain West Conference regular-season championship in 2018.
Â
Boise State is led by Sherle, a dynamic forward who was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and a Third-Team All-American after last season. The senior led the NCAA in goals with 20 a season ago and has scored 48 times in her career. She has already notched three goals in two games this season.
Â
Sophomore Sydney Smith starts in goal for the Broncos, making her first start in a 1-0 win over Idaho in the Broncos' first match of the season. Smith has played every minute in goal for Boise State this season with six saves and a 75.0-percent save percentage.
Â
A Look at the Bengals
Idaho State (0-2-0) is in its first season with Debs Brereton as its head coach. The Bengals hold a 2-1-1 advantage over the Aggies in four matches while NM State won the last match between the two sides, 3-0, in 2016.
Â
Idaho State has struggled offensively through two matches as they have failed to score a goal. Last season, Delaney Johnston led the way for the Bengals with four goals and an assist for nine points.
Â
Senior Katie Hogarth starts in goal for the Bengals after playing 436:17 minutes between the pipes in 2018. Hogarth has stopped nine shots so far this season while allowing four goals. Her save percentage stands at 69.2-percent.
Â
Last Time Out
The Aggies took on Abilene Christian and Wyoming in a pair of home matches on Aug. 23 and Aug. 25, respectively. Against the Wildcats, the Aggies got a goal from Oregon State transfer
Shea O'Connor but fell to ACU 3-1.
Â
Against the Cowgirls, the Aggies fell behind early, conceding a goal off a corner kick in the 6
th minute. However, the Aggies locked in defensively for the rest of the match to keep NM State in the match. In the 70
th minute,
Jody Hernandez played
Eliudth Gonzalez deep down the left flank. Gonzalez beat two Wyoming defenders to the ball and found
Alexa Barrera in the box who turned and finished with her right foot to tie the game 1-1.
Â
The two sides then held each other scoreless and the game went into overtime. In the second overtime, Wyoming had a chance to win the game but
Dmitri Fong was there to make the save on a point-blank shot. From there, neither side threatened and the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw.
