Day One Results
TUCSON, Ariz. - In the opening day of its final fall event of the season, the NM State men's tennis team picked up five singles victories as well as one doubles win on the opening day of the Arizona Invitational at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.
DOUBLES
• Picking up their 11th doubles victory of the fall, Gijs Akkermans and Corey Clarke got off to another strong start. NM State's duo took out Gonzaga's pairing of Pablo Galvan and Tom Hann by a 6-4 tally.
• Only one NM State doubles team could win on opening day, though, as Louis Menard and Martin Simecek were outplayed by Gonzaga's Arthus Bassetiere and Theo McDonald. Menard and Simecek fell by a 6-4 tally in their first-round matchup.
SINGLES
• Two of the Aggies' five singles wins on the day came courtesy of Ryan Ford. NM State's newest player secured victories over Mesa Community College's Andrew Hoffmann (6-1, 4-6, 6-1) as well as Northern Arizona's Mikael Purne (4-6, 6-1, 6-2). In an in-state matchup, Ford dropped to 2-1 on the day after he found himself on the wrong end of a 6-1, 6-2 decision against New Mexico's Nicolas Prieto.
• Akkermans, Clarke, Menard and Simecek each just played a sole singles match and all four of the Aggies won. Pitted against Mesa Community College's Browning, Akkermans lost only six games in his 6-3, 6-3 victory.
• WAC opponents duked it out in the one-on-one bout between Clarke and Grand Canyon's Wyatt Anderson. In the end, it was Clarke who played nearly flawless tennis to earn a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
• Menard matched up with Northern Arizona's Dominik Buzonics and earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
• Simecek started strong against Gonzaga's Oliver Andersson, but Gonzaga's competitor bounced back and claimed a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory.
COMING UP NEXT
