Menard goes toe-to-toe with 50th-ranked singles player in nation

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. - Hoping to generate some measure of success against 24th-ranked Arizona in its second match of the day against the Pac-12 power, the NM State men's tennis team saw Louis Menard put up a strong fight against the 50th-ranked singles player in the nation.

Unfortunately, the Aggies couldn't come up with a team point in the second match of the morning and fell 5-0 to the Wildcats in the second match of the day between the two teams Sunday afternoon at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.

DOUBLES
• Unlike the morning match between the two teams, NM State and Arizona finished all three doubles matches.
• The Wildcats started off strong as Louis Menard and Gijs Akkermans found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-1 decision against Filip Malbasic and Gustaf Strom.
• Arizona clinched the doubles point on the top line when Nicolas Buitrago and Jordy Visser were outpaced, 6-3, by the Wildcats' tandem of Jonas Ziverts and Jared Horwood.
Martin Simecek and Corey Clarke managed to stay within two games of the Wildcats' Nick Lagaev and Conner Olsen on line three, but dropped their match 6-4.

SINGLES
• Arizona opened up a 2-0 lead after Akkermans dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Hassey in fourth-flight play.
• The Wildcats moved one point away from victory following Clarke's 6-2, 6-3 defeat at the hands of Jett Middleton on line six.
• Arizona clinched the match after Visser's 6-0, 6-3 setback to Alejandro Reguant in the second flight.
• That win by Reguant spoiled a potential upset bid by Menard in top-flight action. The Aggies' junior had started his match with 50th-ranked Jonas Ziverts with a 6-4 triumph in set one and the two were tied at 3-3 in the second set when the match was called.

COMING UP NEXT
• The Aggies are scheduled to head to Corpus Christi, Texas, to compete in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's H-E-B Tournament of Champions. The two-day tournament is set for Friday and Saturday.
