Complete WAC Release
DENVER - Two singles matches. Two wins. One award.
In a release made public by the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) office Tuesday morning, NM State men's tennis senior Nicolas Buitrago was bestowed with the title of WAC Men's Tennis Singles Athlete of the Week.
Back-to-back victories - including one of the come-from-behind variety - yielded the weekly award for the Bogotá, Colombia product. During the Aggies' two-match run at the Golden State Invitational, Buitrago was a boon in singles play beginning with his 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Nevada's Isaac Nortey Friday morning at Sacramento State.
Saturday morning in the Aggies' matchup with UC Davis, Buitrago fell behind early but managed to make a comeback to keep his perfect weekend intact. In a showdown with UC Davis' Andrei Volgin on line two, Buitrago dropped the opening set 6-2 before recovering nicely to claim the win. The senior captured the final two sets in order to claim a 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 victory.
Though the Aggies went 0-2 as a team through the course of the weekend, Buitrago's perfect run in one-on-one play hiked his singles record to 4-6 on the year. Both of his matches saw him slotted in the Aggies' second flight for one-on-one action.
Buitrago and the rest of the Aggies (2-9) return to action on Saturday, March 27, to start league action against Texas adversary UTRGV.
