LAS CRUCES, N.M. -
Hannah Leitner's goal in the 50th minute was the deciding factor as NM State (4-9-1) defeated Dixie State (2-8-2) 1-0 on senior day Saturday afternoon at the NM State Soccer Athletic Complex.
The teams were scoreless through the first 45 minutes thanks to a solid defensive effort by the Aggies. NM State allowed just three shot on goals in 90 minutes. Much like Thursday's matchup, Leitner provided a spark for the Aggies coming out of halftime. Leitner was able to break away down the middle of the field and sent a shot that ricocheted off of the goalie into the net to break the tie.
The Aggies' suffocating defense did not allow any good looks for the Trailblazers in the final 40 minutes.
Dmitri Fong got the start in the net on senior day, and she recorded three saves. The Aggies were able to get eight shot on goals compared to Dixie State's three and held an 18-13 advantage in shots taken.
Today's win gave the Aggies a two-game lead over Dixie State in the WAC standings. NM State currently sits sixth in the standings and would qualify for the WAC Tournament on Apr. 13-17.
The Aggies will head to Seattle next week for a two-game series against the Redhawks. The teams will play at 8 p.m. on Thursday night and 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
