Complete WAC Release
DENVER - After winning their first home match in 455 days, a trio of NM State men's tennis players picked up some Western Athletic Conference accolades.
In a release issued by the WAC Tuesday morning, Aggie senior Nicolas Buitrago took home the title of WAC Men's Tennis Singles Athlete of the Week while junior Louis Menard and freshman Jordy Visser were heralded as the league's Doubles Team of the Week.
For Buitrago, it marks the second time in 2021 that the Bogotá, Colombia, native has been lauded as the league's Singles Athlete of the Week. Menard and Visser secured their first Doubles Team of the Week citation of the 2021 season.
Buitrago moved just one win away from tying Menard for the team lead in singles triumphs with his Saturday afternoon victory. Playing on line two, Buitrago extended his WAC-leading singles winning streak to seven matches with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over UT-Permian Basin's Aditya Iyer. After winning just two of his eight singles bouts earlier in the year, Buitrago has been undefeated in one-on-one action over the course of the last month. His singles record stands at 9-6 and includes a perfect 4-0 mark in against WAC competitors.
Also helping NM State conjure up a 7-0 shutout victory over UT-Permian Basin Saturday afternoon at the NM State Tennis Center, Menard and Visser moved to 4-1 in doubles action with their 6-2 top-flight win against the Falcons' duo of Iyer and Paul Schwieger. Buitrago and Visser have now won back-to-back doubles matches.
Buitrago, Menard, Visser and the rest of the Aggies do not have any matches scheduled this week as they prep for the 2021 WAC Men's Tennis Tournament which will be held at the NM State Tennis Center. NM State, the league's regular season co-champion, will be the second seed in the league's postseason tournament and will begin its quest for a berth to the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 1, at 1:00 p.m. when it takes on third-seeded Seattle U in the semifinal round of the WAC Tournament.
