LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The NM State Aggies fell to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in game four of their opening series 11-10. The Aggies open the 2024 season with two wins and two losses at Presley Askew Field.
The action started quickly as the Jackrabbits were able to put one on the board in the top of the first. The Aggies answered in the bottom of the first thanks to Steve Solorzano, who hit an RBI single to left field to tie the ball game.
The Jackrabbits continued the scoring in the top of the second by recording five runs on three hits. The Aggies were able to cut the four-run deficit to just a two-run deficit in the bottom of the second. Gianni Horvat led off the inning with a single and was then brought home by Nick Gore who hit a two-run home run.
The Aggies were not done scoring in the bottom of the second as Keith Jones II hit a single up the middle. Jones would then advance to second on a wild pitch to be put in scoring position for designated hitter Damone Hale. Hale took advantage of the wild pitch and hit an RBI single.
Connor Wylde came in to pitch for starting pitcher Cade Swenson and made quick work of the Jackrabbits, only giving up one hit. Wylde continued to deal on the mound throwing two strikeouts and one flyout.
The Aggies tied the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-run double-to-center field hit by Preston Godfrey, scoring Mitch Namie and Hale.
In the top of the fifth the Jackrabbits scored one run regaining the lead. However, they did not have the lead for long as Jones would hit an RBI triple scoring Jadon Arakaki.
Kade Benavidez came into pitch in the top of the sixth, replacing Wylde. The Jackrabbits were able to score one run off one hit. Benavidez would only throw for one inning after being replaced by Aaron Treloar.
The Aggies tied the ballgame up once again thanks to a couple of throwing errors by the Jackrabbits. Shortstop Romeo Ballesteros was walked with two outs, he then advanced to second thanks to a failed pickoff attempt. Jones was also walked to put runners on first and second. Both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. With Ballesteros being on third the catcher failed to throw a pitch back to the pitcher, Ballesteros took advantage of the error and took off to home to score.
In the top of the eighth the Jackrabbits notched two more runs. The Aggies put one on the board in the bottom of the inning after a sacrifice fly by Gore to score Namie.
In the ninth the Jackrabbits scored one run for some insurance. With three more outs the Aggies put up a valent effort to win the game as Jones would score on a wild pitch. After Jones scored Solorzano hit a single down the left field line. With one out remaining Godfrey was at the plate and smacked a ball backing up the right fielder to the warning track but was caught at the wall just short of a walk off home run.
