Box Score 2 EDINBURG, Texas – NM State continued its spring season this weekend as they traveled to south Texas where they matched up with UTRGV and Morgan State on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at the Rio Grande Invitational. The Aggies split their pair of matches at the Orville Cox Tennis Center – losing 5-2 to the Vaqueros on Saturday before bouncing back with a 4-0 win over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon.
MATCH ONE | NM State 2, UTRGV 5
NM State begin its weekend with a step in the right direction as they earned the doubles point against the host. After falling at No. 1, the Aggies fought back with a 6-4 win at No. 2 from the duo of
Roko Stipetic and Luca Fé d'Ostiani.
Itay Feigin and
Ricardo Mercado then secured the point with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Unfortunately, this momentum did not carry over to singles play as Feigin would record the lone Aggie victory in singles action. The junior from Ashdod, Israel, tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 to notch his fourth singles win of the season. Meanwhile, the remaining five courts would fall in favor of the Vaqueros to hand the Aggies the loss.
MATCH TWO | NM State 4, Morgan State 0
Looking to turn the page, NM State quickly jumped in front as a pair of dominant wins in doubles play on courts one and two offset a loss at No. 3. In doubles, the team of
Tobias Wallin and
Gustavo Campos battled their way to a 6-1 win at No. 1 – marking the tandem's team-best seventh doubles win of the season. Meanwhile, Stipetic and Fé d'Ostiani continued their strong weekend as they notched a 6-3 win at No. 2 to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead entering singles play.
Wallin and Campos then split up, however, each Aggie proved to be just as dominant on their own as Wallin collected a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 2 while Campos earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3. In need of just one more win, the Aggies'
Henrik Lynum clinched the match for the Aggies with his first singles victory of the season – defeating his Morgan State counterpart by a score of 6-1, 6-1, to hand the Aggies their fifth duel win of the spring.
